Art Of This World Gallery is delighted to be showcasing the second solo exhibition by abstract artist Joy Surathep. Joy has acquired quite a following for her tranquil interpretations of the New Zealand landscape. ‘Passage Through Time’ presents a collection of works dealing with the changeable environment of land and seascapes, an exploration into the beauty of our natural environment. These multimedia paintings are made up of layers of subtle colour, textures and mirror-like surfaces achieved through a painstaking process of putting down layers and layers of resin. Cross-cultural symbols like vessels, wakas, floating landforms and seas of water are reoccurring motifs in her paintings. Joy describes the vessel as signifying a journey, a passage from one stage in life to another, “I hope audiences will read their own story and find meaning in my paintings”.
