Celebrating Achievement
HSI promotes hospitality as a positive career choice, actively grows talent and celebrates achievement. HSI holds graduation ceremonies to celebrate the achievement of nationally recognized qualifications and these events allow graduates to share their success with their employers, family and friends. HSI graduations have been held in Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington in June and July, with more scheduled for September through to December.

Priorities for Tertiary Training
The government released its priorities for tertiary training late last year and many providers are currently developing plans for the 2011-2013 timeframe. Although there can sometimes be tension between the priorities of industry and government, we as an industry are well placed to deliver on these over the next three years.

New Web Resource For Business Owners
The Department of Labour has recently launched a new web resource called Infozone: Business Essentials.
This is a resource that provides simple straight forward employment relations and health & safety information for business owners and self employed people. It tells you what you need to know, what steps to put in place and then provides downloadable templates, documents and spreadsheets to apply to your business.

Rock Stars in the Coffee World
‘Baristas are the new rock stars’ was the claim in the Sunday Star Times magazine earlier this year, in its ‘Going Up’ column.
As Steve Hanrahan, Chief Executive of the Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI), the training organisation for the hospitality industry, said at the official launch of HSI’s three new training programmes for baristas: “This claim recognised the rise and rise of coffee consumption here, and the importance so many of us now place on a really well-made cup of coffee.”
